Katherine Regional Language Centre.

Established in 1992, the Katherine Regional Language Centre operates out of Katherine, NT. The Katherine region covers an area  of 600,ooo square kilometres and has about 32 traditional languages as well Kriol. The language centre focuses on research and documentation of the languages, facilitation of school and community based language maintenance programs, archiving of language materials and offers an interpreting service. I’m not sure how up to date the website is but it contains a map of the region and its languages and some basic information about the language situation.

Sadly, this language centre suffered a lot of difficulties in the past few years and has been de-funded and is currently not operating.

  2. Thanks for the update there wamut. Can you suggest someone or another organisation who people should contact if they’re interested in languages from the Katherine region?
